The Alexander County School District was established in 1853 when the area that is now Alexander County was part of McNairy County. The first school was built on what is now Cherry Street in downtown Mt. Airy. In 1904, the original building was burned down, and a new schoolhouse was constructed on what is now the site of Mt. Airy City Hall. In 1951, the old building became overcrowded and a new elementary school was constructed on land donated by J.D.

In September, Alexander County Schools hold an orientation for new students. This event gives parents the opportunity to meet their child’s teachers and learn more about the school’s program. After orienting, students are placed into classes based on their needs and interests. Throughout the school year, parents can access teacher notes from individual classes to get a better idea of what their child is learning. Additionally, Alexander County Schools provides monthly release forms so that parents can check on homework assignments and grades at any time during the school year.
