The School District was established on February 27, 1885, with the following Board members: J. R. Tabor, C. C. Allen, William Vance, John Goldson, and Shadrick Thornton. The county superintendent of education was also a member ex-officio of the board. The first school built in Murphy (the present site of Area Vocational Technical School) was constructed in 1887 and named Murphy High School.
